| Description | Spatial Focus was retained as a team member for the Project Appraisal mission to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The project seeks ways to protect the fragile environment of the Galapagos Islands, while continuing to allow for a reasonable level of tourism, and economic use of the fisheries and other resources by local populations. In addition, evaluation of the resources of Ecuador's coast for eco-tourism, as a possible alternative destination for some tourists interested in the area, was performed by the team. Spatial Focus was responsible for evaluating maps and existing geographic data found at the national and provincial levels, as well as held by the Darwin Institute and Conservation International, who operate in the Galapagos. Overall existing map resources were inadequate, and recommendations were made by Spatial Focus for the procurement of new, high resolution aerial imagery (aerial photo or satellite), and the preparation of detailed maps of the islands and coastal areas with especial detail of enviroinmental features, including water, flora and fauna, as well as access points, roads, trails, and mooring locations. |
